Apples for Grandma

Poetry comic (2018). A collaboration with poet Russell Jones, based on his poem of the same name. The text of this poem was so powerful and menacing on its own, it wasn’t enough to just illustrate it. I loved the idea of meeting and then confounding the expectations of the reader through the visuals, just as Russell’s text does. We start with a spooky forest crossed by a couple of hooded children. But then come the anachronistic hints, glimpsed through breaks in the foliage. And before we know it, they’re dashing through a council estate, on the way to poison grandma.

Published in ‘Cocoon - poems by Russell Jones’ (Tapsalteerie, 2020) and my ‘B-Sides & Shorts’ collection. Text copyright Russell Jones.
